Teaching Your Preschooler About Charity

Posted on 08-25-2017

You can teach your preschooler about charity and the importance of giving back in simple ways, whether you participate together in a local meal delivery for the elderly or donate back-to-school supplies for children in need. Children naturally express empathy, and you can help your little one to grow in understanding the importance of charity by participating together in charitable activities during International Charity Month.

International Charity Month

September is recognized by organizations and individuals around the world as International Charity Month, and community-wide activities and events are often held in conjunction with this holiday. The International Day of Charity was originally established by the General Assembly of the United Nations to recognize the anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death, which falls on September 5, and to draw attention to the importance of charitable work worldwide.

Learning about charity together

During International Charity Month, you and your preschooler can practice giving back in your community and learn together about the vital work of charitable organizations in your community!

• Look up a local YMCA or area churches that might be hosting back-to-school drives. You and your preschoolers can pick up school supplies for children in need and talk about why giving back in this way is important.

• Join a local beautification group one Saturday when they do a trash collection at a local park or around an area lake. Talk with your preschooler about how keeping natural areas clean can make a difference in the community!

• Pay a visit to a local nursing home or join a meal delivery service in your neighborhood. Often those in need lack access to or resources for basics such as healthy food. Talk with your little one about why these essentials are so important whether you are young or old!
